Elisabeth Garden
One of the oldest public parks in Hungary received the name Elisabeth in 1899 in honor of the tragically deceased queen. Since 1942, the protected area has been home to several special plants, including an exceptional specimen of mountain spruce, which is the tallest in the country.
The city purchased Neuhof from General Preysing in 1763 for the citizens of Sopron. From the 1800s, it became the center of the city's social and cultural life. The park features two small ponds supplied with water from the Deák Well. The owner of the brewery built a merry-go-round, and the park became a venue for theatrical and circus performances. Legend has it that the poet Sándor Petőfi, who served in the military in the city in 1839-1840, also enjoyed visiting Neuhof. In 1847, the mostly French-style garden was partly transformed into an English garden, and some details of this transformation are still preserved. The music pavilion, built in 1889, hosted musical performances every week for years, and around 1900, a restaurant was added to the park.
