Fischerkirche Rust

Ruszt

Rust, situated on the Austrian side of Lake Neusiedl, was once the smallest free royal city of historical Hungary. Its charming historic town is exceptionally valuable, protected under UNESCO World Heritage, with its civic houses built between the 16th and 19th centuries in Renaissance and Baroque styles.

It is best known as the city of noble wines and storks.

The Fisherman's Church in Rust (formerly known as Szil in Hungarian) is likely one of its oldest structures.

Legend has it that the Mary Chapel was built by Queen Anjou Mary, daughter of King Louis the Great, the only queen of medieval Hungary, in gratitude for being rescued by the Rust fishermen from the stormy Lake Neusiedl during her escape.
