Goat Church

Sopron

The Benedictine Church, also known as the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or popularly as the Goat Church, is a Gothic church built in the 13th and 14th centuries, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in one of the most prominent buildings on Sopron's Main Square. The Franciscan monks first built their monastery in the city center, and around 1280, they erected their church next to it, made of carved stone from Saint Margit, which is now considered one of the most outstanding examples of early Gothic architecture in Hungary.

One of the most beautiful examples of Hungarian Gothic architecture is the church of the Benedictines in Sopron and the adjoining chapter house. The church and the chapter house can be visited for an entrance fee, and visitors receive a small wooden stick with which they can use interactive terminals to learn about the church's highlights and history.
