Salamander Lake
Don't miss out on Salamander Lake during your excursion in Sopron. It's one of the most civilized resting spots in the mountains, and it's worth spending a few minutes here. The lake is fed by the Rák Stream and the Nature Lover Spring, with a stone structure resembling a gateway built over the outflow, surrounded by wooden tables and seating logs. On both the northern and southern sides of the lake, you'll find ideal picnic spots for grilling and relaxation. Just a few meters to the left from the gravel road in the forest, you can spot the Stone Flower composition made from large rock pieces.
Usually active at night, but after heavy rains, you might encounter the namesake of the lake, the spotted salamander, during the day as well. This protected animal is native to the Hungarian mountains, primarily inhabiting elevations between 400 and 1000 meters, favoring the wet, shady habitats of deciduous forests.
It's worth walking towards Fáber Meadow from the lake, as this is where you'll find the largest chestnut grove in the Sopron Mountains.
